Saint Theophanes the Confessor was Byzantine aristocrat, who later became a monastic and a chronicler. He refused the iconoclastic actions of the Byzantine Emperor of his time, and he was sent to prison for that. Because of the fight he holds against iconoclastic movement, he is a quite popular subject of the iconography.
