What is an Icon?

An Icon is a religious work of art, mostly a painting on wooden panels, in the cultures of Eastern  Orthodoxy, Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, Eastern Catholicism and Oriental Orthodoxy. The most common subjects of the Icons are Jesus Christ, Mary, saints and angels. While the most common form of icons are the paintings on stones, wooden panels or frescos, there are also versions that are woven, printed on paper, gold or silver.
